What happens to borrowed books when you cancel
When your Kindle Unlimited membership ends, any books you borrowed through KU are removed from your device. They were never purchased - they were loans. Books you own outright (purchased with real money or Kindle Credits) remain permanently. If you were in the middle of reading a borrowed book, either finish it before your membership ends or purchase it to keep access.
Kindle Unlimited vs Amazon Prime Reading
Amazon Prime includes a smaller selection of free books called Prime Reading - a few hundred rotating titles. Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid subscription ($11.99/month) with 4 million+ titles. Canceling Kindle Unlimited doesn't affect Prime Reading, which comes with Prime membership.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I get a refund if I just renewed Kindle Unlimited?
- Amazon occasionally grants refunds for recent accidental renewals. Contact Amazon customer service through the Contact Us page. If you haven't accessed any KU books since the renewal, they're more likely to refund.
- Is Kindle Unlimited worth it?
- At $11.99/month, KU makes sense if you read more than 1–2 books per month and the titles you want are in the catalog. The catalog is heavily weighted toward indie and self-published authors - most traditionally published bestsellers are not included.
