Cancel Afterpay - what you can actually do
Never just stop paying Afterpay installments

Missing payments results in late fees and can result in your account being sent to collections. If you are disputing a charge, open a dispute in the app or contact Afterpay support before stopping payments.

How Afterpay refunds work

When you return an Afterpay purchase, the refund goes back through Afterpay. Paid installments are refunded to your card, and future installments are canceled. The process can take 3–10 business days after the merchant processes the return. If you have a dispute with a merchant who will not accept a return, use the Afterpay Resolution Centre in the app before involving your bank.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel an Afterpay payment plan?
Not directly. You need to return the item to the merchant - once the refund is processed, Afterpay cancels remaining installments. Pay off plans early in the app (no penalty) to close individual orders.
What happens if I miss an Afterpay payment?
Afterpay charges a late fee (up to $8 per missed payment) and pauses your account. If unpaid, it can be sent to collections. Contact Afterpay immediately if you are struggling to pay.
How do I close my Afterpay account?
Pay off all active orders, then go to My Profile → Account → Deactivate Account in the app, or contact Afterpay support.
